FAQs
Expand Your Holistic Dentistry Knowledge
We love it when our patients ask questions! We also understand, though, that many people prefer to gather information online before they start learning about something in-person. That is why we have put together the following list of FAQs, along with brief answers. If you would like further explanation on anything you discover here, or if you don’t see the answer to your specific question, please reach out to our Ballston Spa dental team so we can personally assist you.
What Is the Difference Between Traditional and Holistic Dentistry?
Traditional and holistic dentists have a few things in common. For example, both must complete dental school and regularly participate in continuing education. However, traditional dentists primarily treat the mouth as an isolated system. Holistic dentists view the mouth as an integral part of overall health and treat it accordingly. As a result, they tend to use different materials and techniques than traditional dentists.
What Types of Materials Are Used in Holistic Dentistry?
Dr. Dreher and our team use biocompatible materials — that is to say, materials that work well within the human body. That’s why we favor metal-free restorations and fillings, and we provide safe mercury removal.
Why Don’t You Use Fluoride?
While many people believe that fluoride is important for preventing cavities, we take a different stance. Research shows that even small amounts of fluoride introduced through dental treatments can have adverse effects. We’ll be happy to educate you and your family on how to maintain a decay-free smile without the use of fluoride products.
How Can My Oral Health Affect My Overall Health?
There are countless ways that oral health can affect overall wellness. For example, gum disease is linked to an increased risk of numerous systemic health conditions. TMJ dysfunction (TMD) can cause musculoskeletal symptoms throughout the body. Metal-based dental restorations can contribute to issues like mercury poisoning and galvanic toxicity.
I Have Serious Oral Health Problems. Can You Help?
Yes! We have the expertise to take on even complex cases. We also work closely with other local experts to provide the best care possible.
Do You Accept My Insurance?
Because we offer highly specialized service, we are not in-network with any insurance plans. However, we still welcome patients to use their PPO benefits here. We’ll verify your coverage and file claims on your behalf.
